I was drowning in the obligation to not miss it.</p><p>About a year ago, something felt off.</p><p>The newsletters I wanted to read had outgrown my attention. Some were paid. Many were relevant. All looked like signal.</p><p>The lived experience wasn&#8217;t abundance. It was pressure.</p><p>Every unread issue felt less like a resource and more like a claim on future time.</p><p>I wasn&#8217;t &#8220;behind&#8221; in a productivity sense. I was behind in a human one: important things arrived faster than I could metabolize them.</p><p>Unsubscribing felt like loss. Keeping them felt like debt.</p><div><hr></div><h2>The automation trap</h2><p>So I tried to fix it.</p><p>Ingest everything. Classify. Summarize. Rank. Deliver a clean weekly digest.</p><p>On paper: intelligence applied to overload.</p><p>In practice: brittle.</p><p>The stack broke in different ways depending on models, prompts, and inputs. Fixing one failure mode created another. Costs shifted. Reliability never stabilized.</p><p>At one point, a summary confidently highlighted the wrong conclusion from a piece I actually cared about. Not wildly wrong. Just enough to shift the takeaway. I only noticed because I already knew the topic.</p><p>That&#8217;s the dangerous part.</p><p>That&#8217;s the surface story.</p><p>It&#8217;s not the real one.</p><div><hr></div><h2>What this was really about</h2><p><strong>I wasn&#8217;t automating reading. I was automating the fantasy of catching up.</strong></p><p>Not comprehension first. Relief first.</p><p>Relief from backlog anxiety. From wasted subscriptions. From the sense that the important things were always just out of reach.</p><p><strong>I thought I had a reading problem. I had a finitude problem.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h2>I tried to solve overload at the wrong stage</h2><p>I treated summarization as cleanup.</p><p>But the mistake happened upstream.</p><p>Too much entered. Too little was filtered. Noise and value mixed before any system touched it.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t need better digestion.</p><p>I needed a better gate.</p><div><hr></div><h2>The real problem is taste</h2><p>A useful digest doesn&#8217;t just compress. It decides.</p><p>What deserves interruption? What can wait? What only looks important?</p><p>That&#8217;s not summarization. That&#8217;s judgment.</p><p>The system wasn&#8217;t failing to read. It was failing to know what I&#8217;d consider worth reading.</p><p>If this were just summarization, better models would fix it.</p><p>Taste doesn&#8217;t scale that way.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Where summaries break</h2><p>Fluent summaries still fail where it matters: emphasis.</p><p>They drop caveats, bend intent, and keep surface meaning while shifting the point.</p><p>They don&#8217;t need to hallucinate to be dangerous. They just need to be slightly wrong.</p><p>So the work didn&#8217;t disappear. It moved from reading to verification. Without trust, the summary becomes a second inbox.</p><div><hr></div><h2>&#8220;Human in the loop&#8221; isn&#8217;t a fix</h2><p>Once the machine speaks first, it shapes judgment.</p><p>First draft wins more often than we admit.</p><p>Ranking sets plausibility. Summaries set salience. Ordering sets attention.</p><p>You get slower without being safer.</p><div><hr></div><h2>The real technical failure: coordination</h2><p><strong>I didn&#8217;t hit an intelligence ceiling. I hit a coordination ceiling.</strong></p><p>Each new layer increased failure modes. Each model change reshaped breakage. Each cost optimization added instability.</p><p>The real cost wasn&#8217;t inference.</p><p>It was babysitting.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Privacy isn&#8217;t optional</h2><p>The more useful the system became, the more personal it became.</p><p>A system that reads like me also reveals me.</p><p>Which made privacy non-negotiable.</p><p>Privacy isn&#8217;t a late decision. It decides if the system can exist.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Aim lower: triage, not replacement</h2><p>Don&#8217;t build a system that reads for you.</p><p>Build one that helps you choose.</p><p>Reduce junk. Surface candidates. Shape the queue. Flag what might matter.</p><p>Stop before pretending to replace judgment.</p><p><strong>I didn&#8217;t need a system that understands for me. I needed one that knows when to interrupt me.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h2>What changed</h2><p>I aimed at the wrong level.</p><p>I tried to automate relief.</p><p><strong>Relief is not resolution.</strong></p><p>The unread pile isn&#8217;t a queue to clear.</p><p>It&#8217;s a reminder: more value exists than I can process.</p><p>Some things should be canceled. Parts of their work are becoming easier to automate, easier to standardize, easier to devalue.</p><p><strong>The problem is not the fear. The problem is staying passive inside it.</strong></p><p>Fear should move you toward the work you need to do next. It must not turn you into a spectator reading headlines and waiting for clarity to arrive. The part of your work that feels most exposed may also be where learning to use AI well gives you the most agency back.</p><p>That changes the question. Not <em>&#8220;How bad will this get?&#8221;</em> but: <em>&#8220;What is this pressure showing me, and what do I need to practice next?&#8221;</em></p><div><hr></div><h2>Fear is a signal and a map</h2><p>Fear around AI is rarely random. It gathers around the parts of work that already feel exposed: repetitive tasks, standardized output, routine communication, predictable analysis, early drafts, administrative coordination. Fear gathers where work is already vulnerable.</p><p>That is uncomfortable, but useful. <strong>Fear is supposed to tell you where to look.</strong></p><p>Most people respond too vaguely. They ask: Will AI replace everyone? Will this destroy my industry? Will my job survive? Those questions are too abstract to act on. A better question is smaller: What exactly in my work feels exposed, and why?</p><p>That pressure is not attacking your whole value. It is exposing a thinner layer of it: repeatable output, predictable process, low-judgment execution. That layer may still matter but it was never the strongest part of what you bring.</p><p>Once the question becomes specific, something shifts. You stop defending your whole identity and start redesigning one exposed layer. Not to beat AI at what it will increasingly do well but to use it to remove thinner work so your attention moves toward judgment, synthesis, taste, and responsibility.</p><p>You do not become safer by waiting for clarity. You become safer by building capability where your work is weakest.</p><p><strong>Fear stops being something you feel. It becomes a map of where adaptation needs to begin.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h2>Agency, not just speed</h2><p>The deeper value of AI fluency is not productivity. It is agency.</p><p>Most people talk about AI as a speed tool. Faster drafts, faster summaries, faster research. That is real but it is the shallowest layer. Fluency gives you more ways to respond when work changes. More room to think, test, build, and adapt. In unstable environments, that flexibility matters more than efficiency.</p><p>Roles shift. Employers reorganize. Stability turns out to be thinner than people hoped. In that kind of world, fluency creates mobility often before it increases your income.</p><p>The tell is specificity. Someone paralysed asks: <em>&#8220;Will this replace me?&#8221;</em> Someone moving asks: <em>&#8220;Which part of my work is most exposed and what do I need to practice first?&#8221;</em> The second question has an answer. The first only has more anxiety.</p><p><strong>What capability do you need to build now so that this pressure becomes leverage later?</strong></p><p>The people who benefit most from this moment will not be the ones who felt no fear. They will be the ones who used it as a compass and let it push them toward practice instead of paralysis.</p><div><hr></div><h2>AI is more than a better search box</h2><p>Most people underestimate AI because they use it too narrowly as a faster way to retrieve information, summarize documents, or generate a first pass. That is useful. It is also the shallowest layer.</p><p>The more important use begins when AI helps you think. Not think for you but think with more structure, more range, and more speed. Compare options. Test assumptions. See weaknesses in your own reasoning before they cost you.</p><p>That is where AI stops being convenient and starts being part of how you navigate uncertainty.</p><p>Use it shallowly and you get shallow value. Use it where thinking is messy, decisions are unclear, and tradeoffs are real and its value becomes hard to ignore.</p><p>This does not make human judgment less important. It makes it more important. The better the tool, the more it matters that you ask better questions, set better criteria, and notice when a clean answer is built on weak thinking.</p><p><strong>AI becomes more powerful when it helps you decide, not just when it helps you find.</strong></p><div><hr></div><p>Some tasks will become thinner. Some roles will narrow. Some old assumptions about stability will not survive. That pressure is real.</p><p>But fear is only a problem if it keeps you still.</p><p>Most people read the articles, test a few prompts, decide AI isn&#8217;t useful for their work just to stick the head into the sand and go back to waiting. That is not adaptation. That is a vastly more anxious form of staying still!</p><p>The alternative is not optimism. It is practice. Practice moves you from spectator to participant. It turns vague anxiety into specific questions: What is most exposed? What can I automate? Automate workflows. Optimize performance. Strip inefficiencies like dead skin. I&#8217;m good at it.</p><p>Somewhere along the way, I started applying that same logic to <em>myself</em>.</p><p>Sleep optimization. HRV tracking. Step counting. Meditation streaks. Counting calories.<br>I stopped <em>living in</em> my body and started <em>managing</em> it.</p><p>Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve learned after years in automation:<br><strong>The more you automate, the less you understand.</strong></p><p>Companies outsource their accounting and lose sight of their finances.<br>I outsourced my health to an app&#8212;and forgot how I <em>actually</em> feel.</p><h2>The Swiss Perspective on &#8220;Efficiency&#8221;</h2><p>I grew up in Switzerland.<br>There, efficiency isn&#8217;t about more data&#8212;it&#8217;s about <em>better decisions with less noise</em>.</p><p>A Swiss watch doesn&#8217;t buzz or glow or coach your REM cycles. It just tells time&#8212;<strong>beautifully</strong>&#8212;for decades.</p><p>Meanwhile, we&#8217;ve convinced ourselves that more metrics = more progress.<br>I know engineers who check their <em>readiness scores</em> before deciding whether to have sex.<br>Let that sink in.</p><h2>What Nobody Tells You About Data</h2><p>I work with data every day. And here&#8217;s the uncomfortable truth:<br><strong>Most health data is noise wearing a lab coat.</strong></p><p>Your sleep score fluctuates based on a tangled mess of variables your app <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> track: room temp, stress, dinner, hormones, caffeine, your partner&#8217;s mood, full moon energy&#8212;take your pick.</p><p>So when your watch tells you, &#8220;Poor sleep,&#8221; what are you supposed to <em>do</em> with that?<br><em>Worry about it?</em> Great&#8212;now you&#8217;ll sleep worse tomorrow.</p><p>Even good apps like Sleep Cycle ask for data they can&#8217;t fully interpret. The gaps mislead more than they guide.</p><h2>The Only Metric That Matters</h2><p>After years of building smart systems, I&#8217;ve found one metric that actually predicts growth:</p><p><strong>Your comfort with discomfort.</strong></p><p>Not your heart rate.<br>Not your meditation streak.<br>Not your 10,000 steps.</p><p><em>Are you willing to do things that feel awkward, uncertain, or a little scary?</em></p><p>That&#8217;s what growth feels like.<br>And no device can measure it&#8212;but <em>you</em> can.</p><h2>The 5-Second Growth Test</h2><p>Want to know if you&#8217;re growing? Ask yourself:<br><strong>&#8220;What did I do this week that I wouldn&#8217;t have done last month?&#8221;</strong></p><ul><li><p>Had a hard conversation? &#8594; Growth.</p></li><li><p>Tried something new? &#8594; Growth.</p></li><li><p>Set a boundary? &#8594; Growth.</p></li><li><p>Closed all your rings? &#8594; Maintenance in disguise.</p></li></ul><h2>My 30-Day De-Optimization Experiment</h2><p>I turned off all health notifications for 30 days.<br>No sleep scores. No activity rings. No &#8220;Time to breathe.&#8221;</p><p>Just&#8230; lived. Like humans did for thousands of years before we let machines tell us how we&#8217;re doing.</p><p>Week 1 was weird. I kept reaching for numbers that weren&#8217;t there.<br>By week 3? Something shifted.</p><p>I started trusting my body again.</p><p>Tired? Slept.<br>Energetic? Moved.<br>Stressed? Dealt with it&#8212;no tracking required.</p><p>Results? Better sleep. More energy. Less anxiety.<br>Turns out, your body&#8217;s not broken. It just needs you to <em>listen</em>.</p><h2>The Automation Engineer&#8217;s Paradox</h2><p>The irony?<br>The more I automate other people&#8217;s systems, the <em>less</em> I want to automate my own life.</p><p>Real efficiency isn&#8217;t about optimizing <em>everything</em>&#8212;it&#8217;s about optimizing the <em>right</em> things and ignoring the rest.</p><p>Your phone knows where you are. It has no clue where you&#8217;re going.<br>Your watch can read your heart rate. It can&#8217;t read your courage.</p><h2>Your Challenge</h2><p>Pick one health metric you obsess over.<br>Turn it off for two weeks.
